SP 4449 racing at high speed through the Columbia River Gorge on two round trips between Portland and Wishram. Amtrak 156 was selected as the diesel power on this excursion. Thanks to the help of 4449steam riding on board as part of the crew on every trip, I was far better able to determine where the train would be and when, which allowed for better shots on my part.

And as of July 2011, this racehorse is 70 years old, and still kicking.

  • do you figure Doyle will ever put a True SP whistle on this engine I was told the real one got stolen and I allways wondered why they dont hire the E8 6051 from CSRM to run with this engine instead of Amtrak power what a shame it just sitting at the muselm as a tourist train engine and not out on the main with 4449 they would make a Great Pair

  • @844Steamtrain cool video I havd an Oh S**T moment with this engine when it was on its way to the Owaso festable I was headed west on the Empire Builder sitting in the dinning car outside of Havre Montana when I heard SP4449 over on the radio which Suprised the hell out of me however the Stupid BNSF dispactcher decided to hold 4449 outside town for us to do our station work all I got to see of 4449 was an Orange closeup and a bunch of private cars when we passed outside town

  • so the amtrak locomotive is there to take most of the load?

  • Really nice....What a machine....

  • nice catch, beautiful as always

but i seem to caught something interesting

that consist, if i'm not mistaken is the same consist that the 3751 pulled during her L.A. to San Diego trip back in 2010

  • Nice Capture!!!

  • Thanks for the vid. She's the only steamer I've ever seen in action.

I happened to ride up to a crossing in 1977 and got to see the Bicentennial Museum enroute to Miami. Also got to hear her blow every crossing between Boynton Beach and West Palm Beach on her late night return. I'll never forget the sound!

  • At 1:13, cattle get into the shot... It never fails that someone will walk into a shot like that.
