"Deep Purple" was first composed as a piano number by Peter DeRose in 1933, and when the sheet music became very popular Mitchell Parrish added lyrics to the song in 1938. It was first popularly recorded by Larry Clinton & His Orchestra with Bea Wain doing the vocal in 1939, and has since been recorded by many including this version by Nino Tempo and his sister April Stevens. Their version was the #1 song in the U.S. one month before the Kennedy assassination in the fall of 1963.

I was 5 years old the year this song was released. My best friend's brother was killed with 3 other teens at a level train crossing in a car. Every time I heard this song, I would have tears in my eyes. I still feel her pain. Her name was chi chi, and the brother was Dickie. I loved her so much.

I enjoy the way it just rolls along flowing constantly as does a river.
