Although rankings will still be a good way to track part of success on other Search Engines, this is changing with Google and by the end of this year Rankings Results will be much more meaningless as a way of tracking success this is because Google is has just created "personalized search" technology based on location and previous searches of users even if they don't have Google accounts, so start more of a focus on ROI instead
I'm a SEO Tech and hope I can answer your question about the listing dropping off of google... here is the deal normally within about a week from the time that the content gets listed in the SERPs Google will normally pull the content back down in order to review the content to make sure that the content is databased correctly this is to help combat blackhatting, and about 3 days after the content is reviewed it will then show with a more accurate rank result
