This is a wind motor or windmill which I constructed following the plans found in "Windmills and Wind Motors: How to Build and Run Them," first published in 1910.
The rotor has a span of 6'6" and according to the book develops slightly more than 1/10 hp in a 16 mph breeze. The wind axle turns a crank which actuates a pump/compressor.

[Edit]
Sorry about the quality (or lack thereof). I assure you that it looks better OFF youtube.

  • Thanks for sharing this design! Awesome!

  • Thanks, I appreciate it!

  • nice work, the song sounds exactly like "nothing else matters" by metallica - I do like this cello band.

it looks like it can't rotate for changes in wind direction - did you get a fix for that?

  • Thanks!

You're right, it is a Metallica song, but this is a cover by Apocalyptica... on cellos!

You're also right that it doesn't swivel, but that isn't really a problem where it was, since it's a fairly narrow valley near the sea where the wind mostly blows in one direction.

  • a true work of art...

  • That's very kind! Thank you.

  • Hey, thanks! You're absolutely right. When you live in a very dry place like I do, being careful with water is important.
