In the borderlands of Thailand's Golden Triangle, a rugged region known for its drug smuggling and impoverished hill tribes, one man devotes himself to the welfare of the region's children

A former Thai boxer, turned Buddhist monk, Phra Khru Bah Neua Chai Kositto (also known as the Tiger Monk), travels widely on horseback, fearlessly dispensing prayers, health care, education and tough love to villagers far from the protection and support of governments or non-governmental organizations.

With his Golden Horse Temple he's built an orphanage, school and clinic - a haven for the children of the region, who see him as a shaman, father figure and coach.

Stunning cinematography, intimate filmmaking and a compelling story make this film an extraordinary experience of a hidden realm. BUDDHA'S LOST CHILDREN gives the term "grassroots Buddhism" new meaning, and in the end it's the children's journey we share. Their transformation from neglected village boys to self-confident novices.

Director Mark Verkerk gained unprecedented access to film this intimate and dramatic story over the course of a year on location in Thailand. buddhism practices peace. there are many kinds of buddhism, just like christianity. some use martial arts like the one seen her or in shaolin as a means of mental focus, etc and others use pure mediation and art such as tibet or cambodia. but never have i seen buddhism be used for the catalyst of violence like christianity, judaism and islam.

@pasteldeva Wrong! This depends on the variety of Buddhism you mean. Not all forms are peaceful. Check the history of Tibetan Buddhism in Bhutan and you will find warriors and violence in the name of Buddhism. Centuries ago an to this day!

@newwavenewrave in that case you've have never looked into the case of the people from southern Bhutan, exiled from their homeland by a Buddhist king and government. Some 400 political prisoners and 150.000 people in exile over the course of twenty years. All is not what it seems, anywhere, anytime.

bought it an amazon with all the specials. This movie is highly recommendable! Not just because of charismatic Khru Bah, but because of all the special everyday stories one learns about there. Though people should keep in mind that Khru Bah is an extrem exception, not just for living in that place but also for his way of keeping the monaestic rules. He's one of the many monks who have the function of social workers, but that's part of the Dhamma too.

He teaches them to be able to defend themselves because they are traveling through dangerous country for most of the year. Kru Bah was nearly killed on the border if it had not been for his Muay Thai. This is the best documentary I have ever seen

This violates Buddhas monastic rules against fighting or hitting. The purpose of Buddhist monastic life is study and meditation not training to be a warrior. Buddha taught a pacifist philosophy.
