Good point. Most moves could be modified, however. For instance, instead of trying to aim for the thumb, aim at the wrist; you're bound to hit the wrist or thumb. And instead of the thrust to the throat, a strike to the left side of your opponent's face. A nicely executed strike should allow the bo to also protect your chest against a strike, which would be your opponent's most effective move at that point.
