This is the trailer for our new documentary film release, Art of the Japanese Sword. Scheduled for release on DVD in early December 2010.
Empty Mind Films collaborated with Japanese Sword expert Paul Martin. We bring together some of the very best swordsmiths and artists in Japan and tell the story through their own words. It is a detailed exploration of the making of a Japanese sword from the making of the steel, to forging and polishing and through to wrapping the handle! Also features the classic sword martial arts of Katori Shinto Ryu and a look at the sword and Shinto shrines. For more information on this new DVD release go to emptymindfilms.com.

  • He was slightly off in what the sword means to the Bushido (Samurai).

To understand the meaning you have to look at the kanji character of the sword. It shows both the character 'edge' and 'combining'. The Sword is two. Its twin personalities as a work of art and a deadly edge cannot be expressed as one or the other, they are always entwined. The same applies to the samurai.

The sword and the Bushi share the same soul and as the sword reflects the Bushi, the Bushi reflects the sword.

  • Beautiful. If I could see the entire process, I would probably cry by the beautifulness.

To have an authentic japanesse Katana is one of my dream

to the idea of romantic imagery, it's true that this is spiritualistic talk and lots of samurai would probably of discounted this as poetic imagery but to many samurai of more aesthetic principles this would be absolutely true. this is not my thought, its in the book 'Sword and Brush' by David Lowry, a Yagyu Shinkage swordsman, it was recommended by my tai chi master who also trained in a traditional sword style in japan and has started his own school, Naikan Tai Chi.

  • @TKane001 give me a break. Bushido does not mean samurai. and fanciful quotes and romantic images of all samurai are slightly silly.

  • This is so COOL. Takano sensei at 2:19! Nakamura Ryu Battodo. I llok at my Nihonto all the time...then look at my credit card statement and cry....7000.00 but it was worth it.

  • The making of the sword deserves the title of a true martial arts.

  • cool

  • Simply amazing.
