The Malian guitar tradition that was created by and is typified by Vieux's dad Ali Farka Toure, comes out of the Malian griots who play the kora, a traditional stringed instrument from the ancient Malian empire.
That's why their style of playing sound similar to, but still so different from, traditional US southern blues guitar.
