Malian guitarist Vieux Farka Toure follows in his father Ali Farka Toure's groundbreaking footsteps by creating his own unique place in African music.

I shot this handheld on a miniDVcam with no cuts.

  • He gets a killer tone out of that Godin. Wish I knew how Malian players get that zingy sound!

  • The Malian guitar tradition that was created by and is typified by Vieux's dad Ali Farka Toure, comes out of the Malian griots who play the kora, a traditional stringed instrument from the ancient Malian empire.

That's why their style of playing sound similar to, but still so different from, traditional US southern blues guitar.

  • and... that's why I stayed focused mostly on his guitar solos. Vieux Farka Toure is brilliant... don't miss a chance to see him live!
