New location video wise though I've known about this crossing for about 20+ years. It is the grade crossing in Vernon NJ on Sussex County Highway 644 (Vernon Crossing). This is on the Susquehanna's former Conrail/nee Lehigh & Hudson River line. I had relatives that lived on this road in the 1980's though I never saw a Susquehanna train run on it while I visited them. A lot has changed on this crossing over the years. I think it was just flashers when I first saw the crossong & later on, when the railroad got busy ,they put in gates. The Cantilever looks relatively new and it's on the western side of the crossing. Also, off camera to the left is an old station coverted into a deli.

As for the train: Two Yellow Jacket Tunnel Motors bracketing CEFX SD40M-2, a lease unit, hauling 44 cars.

{Yes, that's my Subaru in the background :p}

  • Nice shot. That part of NYSW is the old Lehigh & Hudson River RR.

  • @YankeePat94 Thanks. If this was a cloudy day with no harsh shadows I would have taken this facing south on the other side of the tracks. There is a long view of the line that goes into distant woods. It would be a great shot though last night's would have been on the shadow side.

  • Great shot!

  • @GenesisSanctuary Thanks. I may go there again sometime next week.

  • Cool shot! I've been there before; do you know what that building is on the right? I walked through it before it very interesting. Seems haunted haha

  • @21stCenturyLtd Thanks. I don't know what that building is. I think I waited nearly an hour till it showed up. I first shot it in Elmwood Park by that bridge but the video looked bad due to thick haze. That was 5:10PM. It took about 2 hours to get to this crossing!

  • @21stCenturyLtd that was an old creamery. i used to live in highland lakes and railfanned at this spot often. hope that helps

  • @YankeePat94 Oh wow, thanks for the insight

  • @21stCenturyLtd the building on the right was a creamery. It suffered a number of fires, with the last one in 1940s, and has been sitting abandoned ever since.

  • @ELSD45801 I've been surprised by that too. When they go around the "Susquehanna Loop" they go 12 miles out of their way!
