Thanks for a very informative video. has gone some way to explaining why the HDMI sockets on ny Sony Bravia do not work and why the HDMI to component cable I bought is absolutely useless.

Hdmi cables have a much more sopistiicated video encoding than component video. HDMI uses a video encoding called "Transition Minimized Differential Signaling", by which it transmit all of the video information with digital transmission; without any loss or interference of video transmission. VGA is similar to HDMI, but it uses digital to analog transmission. The big difference between component and HDMI is that component does not synctronize the horizontal and vertical scan lines like VGA,HDMI.

@Astrithor Yes, when i bought ps3 it actually only came with component cables. I had to buy HDMI. Either way if you have the right cable you can hook ps3 to both HDMI and regular tv.

some channels here are in 1080i others are 720i
An HD15 Y/Pb/Pr 3 RCA Adapter Cable is a component video. There is device on the market which does exactly what you are looking for and more by extracting also the audio signal from the HDMI signal as well; it is an "HDMI to VGA & R/L Stereo Audio Converter ". You can find it online at monoprice

@AxiomHomeTheaters What's the Difference Between HDMI 1.3a vs. 1.4a?
tylertfs123 2 months ago
@tylertfs123 @tylertfs123 there's a great chart on Wikipedia that can help you out with the exact bandwidth capability difference. We can't leave links but you can find it at that site slash wiki slash HDMI, and it will show you the differences in terms of 3D over HDMI, Ethernet channel, Audio Return Channel, and 4k x 2K resolution support. Hope that helps!

ok, im kind of a noob when it comes to modern system technologies, so someone please tell me: do you have to have an HD tv to play a PS3, or can you get the old red, yellow, and white cables to go with it?

@Astrithor PS3 does have an analog video output for connectivity to non HD TV's.

Hi TY, If your PS3 system has an HDMI output jack and your HD 50-inch flat screen has an HDMI input, then use them, and the image should be excellent and in HD. Or, if your PS3 system has just component video outputs (three RCA jacks usually color-coded red, green and blue), then use the component-video connections. You won't get HD rez if you don't use either HDMI or component-video connections
