I almost always agree with what you have to say, but on this video, you totally don't get it. That film did a wonderful job of breaking an already fragile Black community by encouraging many (not all) Black females to see an unreal view of BM.

"Mista" was not "Massa" in real life. The system would not allow him that power.

If you, of all people, can't see this, then I can't expect the majority of Black females to see it either. I expect that you WILL see that in the future.

  • @Evens1 You don't seem to realize that I agree w/ what you are saying ...Some would say that I'm a contradiction, criticizing this, but supporting Tyler Perry ...But Tyler's flicks give hope for black relationships that have been damaged (they usually end in a marriage & happily ever after for a black couple), but I can't say that the Color Purple left me feeling as there was hope in black male/black female relationships, although I'm glad that Celie found some peace

  • WHAT DID SHUG'S FATHER DO IN THE MOVIE , TO MAKE YOU THINK HE WAS PORTAYED IN A POSITIVE LIGHT ???

  • @micpeee I believe I mentioned him, in being the only one who MAY HAVE been the "positive" male in the movie (besides, maybe, Shug's husband, but we knew nothing about him), but that's to point out how negative the characters were (that that was the best we could get)

  • I am a black woman and I really don't think Alice Walker wrote all of the color purple. Why are all the characters so negative? Seems like it was ghost written by a non-black person like a man. No matter how screwed up a black woman can be I don't think she can write all the characters like this. I mean its been years since I read the book and I don't think it was as bad as the movie. But why are black men protesting against all BW, why not protest against Steven Spielberg? R they scared?

  • roots / the color purple 2 good movies

  • The color purple story was written by Alice Walker a a BW who married to a white man and later in life engaged into s serious relationship another black woman.

That should explain the reason why this movie dipicted black men so harshly.

  • "Swain" (played by Lawrence Fishburne) was a goodcharacter albeit not a major role. "Harpo" wasn't all THAT bad either.

  • You may repost my comment.

On the topic of movies that relate to women and their experiences, The Long Walk Home - also stars Whoopi. It has been ages since I've seen it - almost a decade - but it made me cry in seventh grade. I remember it being a great movie. If you haven't seen it, and can locate a copy, it is definitely recommended.

  • i would say that the issue isnt how the negro man is prtrayed in this movie but, how this portrayal is processed by the viewer. the ability to discern context
