this is superb, the rest of you dont know what you are on about, i truly hope you arent the sort that want to see Brad Pitt and some sex scenes........
i am an avid M.R. James fan, and i notice that this isnt true to the story, but on the other hand it is true to the mentality and theme of both person and period. an eccentric Cambridge professor, obviously quite similar to James himself, in a period setting with perhaps a perfect recreation of the period in question.
hollywood? oh dear.

Some of the other comments seem to miss the the point - that this an adaptation, not a slavish homage to MRJ. As a piece of drama it captures the atmosphere of the location brilliantly. Parkins' inner turmoil as his logical thought processes are gradually undermined by the presence of the supernatural are something entirely unique to this TV version - indeed, it is what the film is all about and as such bears no similarity to MRJ's story. Hordern interprets the role superbly in my opinion.

I thought this was a little masterpiece - much better than the more recent BBC adaptations. The cinematography is superb: those wonderful shots of Hordern walking on the beach, and the inspired shot of the gravestone surrounded by umbels, and Hordern entering the picture from behind it. I enjoyed his performance, but it was the visual fascination which left me wondering why other commenters were so disappointed. The BBC seems to have lost the plot in the years since this was made.

M.R James's superb story is just not done justice in this poor screen version. I found myself willing for the end scene to come purely because I was so bored of watching Parkin do the same 2 things....EAT AND MUMBLE.....he had no character, no depth was just wooden and uninteresting......a very very poor adaption.

My apologies if I have upset anyone who loves this adaptation, but after having read the incredibly eerie story and getting excited about a screen version, this was close to heart-breaking.

OK, I am all in favour of subtlety, and being minimal with what you show, specially when you are trying to scare. But this was so very disappointing. For about 30 of the 40 minutes it lasts, we are treated to nothing but Michael Hordern's infuriating character eating and mumbling to himself. I know the Professor is meant to be somewhat pompous and annoying, but good god. The scene at the beach and the dream sequence later were great, but they did little to stop me from just wanting it to be over

Yes good to see the full version of this once again. I'm sorry but the John Hurt version (much as I love him as an actor) had nothing to do with this at all. Why replace the whistle (a fundamental part of the story) with a ring?
