The best staple remover i have found is a MODIFIED flat blade screwdriver. Real upholstery staples (like Empire) can be removed easily by grinding a flat blade screwdriver to fit inside the legs of the staple. Taper the edges slightly and sharpen the tip to make it easy to slip under the staple. Cut a narrow notch in the tip half way between the sides. This allows you to grab the leg of the staple if needed to twist it out. Try it. I can pull staples out of leather without damaging the finish.
