Google search for ".htaccess password protect directory" brought up some promising pages. if that's not it ... don't think I can help ;-) Good luck!

The problem I am having is that for whatever reason the page will not recognize the .htaccess file and loads the page without any authentication.

what do you want it to do? just open it up and plop whatever code you want in there. usually - your software will write on it automatically (but I work mostly in wordpress - ...) ... this is in your cpanel - shouldn't matter what OS you're using? write it in notepad or whatever macs use and stick it in there :)

Have a suggestion for you - I imagine that you run into this more often than just his once ... there's a "slow videos down" kind of tool that'll help. Just google "slow videos down" and you should see several choices. I have used winamp successfully.
