Olympus E5 in the freezer on Christmas day, UK. The record breaking cold snap paralysing the country (embarrassingly!). Air temps down to -10C. I have always wanted to capture a time lapse of a freeze in action. The E5 was a perfect tool for the set.

I set up the Olympus E3 powered via external cable and armed with a home made dew shield to shoot time lapse (via external controller) all night. With the aid of a simple torch pointing on the E5 I was able to capture over 5000 exposures during an all night shoot of the E5 freezing over.

Both E3 & E5 cameras working fine next morning.
Music - "Neo Western Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com)".

Regarding the dew shield. Constructed using some camping bed matting. I added room to slot in a zippo hand warmer. You can get them on Amazon. These are fuelled with lighter fluid and once lit last well over 12 hours. The entire setup, when used, ensures the air surrounding the lens stays nicely above the dew point temperature. I have not encountered moisture since using this setup. Good luck.

Hi Mark, great video! Really interesting to see things frost-up like this. I shoot time-lapse myself and get thwarted by dew when doing shoots at night. Really like your dew shield method and I'm going to do something similar. I've just grabbed a Zippo hand warmer but my only concern is that they don't seem to get hot enough?

Thanks. No probs with the zippo. When they get going they are too hot to touch & I've had some lasting well over 24 hrs too. Make sure you ignite properly. Don't use matches but a lighter or other burner and leave it touching the pads for a good minute. This will get it going nicely :-)

How do you defrost it? How long does it take? There would have been a little moisture in the air around the mirror. Any moisture issues on the inside? Slow defrost (put it in a freezer that has an auto defrost cycle) or fast (bring it inside and use a hair dryer on it)?
