@gerrad1973 normally, you're right. the end-product of any soccer skill should be a goal. in this case, however, pele achieves immortality (at least as much as any mortal can). and immortality is the goal of the artist, at least in a romantic sense. further, in my opinion, we remember this particular play by pele particularly BECAUSE he misses. this flash of brilliance, is followed by a HUMAN mistake. i don't know the outcome of this particular game, but i will never forget this clip.
-
Yeah, and people remember this because it was the first time, just like the Cruyff for his turn. Don't take 'target' literally here too lol, I really don't know why we're arguing anymore.
-
@DarkViIIain EVERYTHING has never been done before at some point....all dummys were original at one time - players try new skills all the time - some of the good ones even SCORE with them! Talent might hit a target - but Pele didnt here. FACT.
-
It is his greatest dummy, because it was original, it has never been done before, it served its purpose as a piece of skill. Do you not see why so many people still remember the dummy even if he didnt score?
'Talent hits a target no one else can hit; Genius hits a target no one else can see'
Congrats on Blomqvist for scoring after seeing the skill, but he didnt invent it, and its easy to critise after you've seen the target yeah?

@gerrad1973 provide a cross which the striker should have scored. bypassing an opponent is not a product, neither is retaining possession - they are transient proponents of an end-product - namely a GOAL (and/or corss or pass to get one). He retained possession - but you fail to mention that he did it in an area that was completely ineffective - and that from a very clear opportunity to score. Its incorrectly named - his GREATEST dummy? No - he scored with others - Pele Fail sums it up
-
@DarkViIIain Look - Its not difficult.....Pele was through 1-on-1. He could have easily scored by going left for a tap in. Pele decided to do this elaborate dummy rather than score. In doing the dummy on this throughball he was taken far too wide to score - and he missed. Thats is why he failed. You can go past a whole team 3 times each player - if you then cannot score there is no end product. Blomqvist chose the right throughball and score, Cruyff did the turn which allowed him to then
-
The END PRODUCT of the dummy, was to delibrately bypass the opponent by leaving the ball and circling the opponent, and still retain possession of the ball afterwards. Now can you actually answer my question, Is that the case here? THAT is the point of this video (Pele's greatest dummy). Pele should've squared it? To who? Please do not mention possibilities which does not relate to the context of the situation we're talking about just for the sake of argument.
-
@DarkViIIain Nonsense....if you want to argue about it then at least watch it...the cross was a good one- straight to the feet of the striker who missed his kick - you should watch it. It had an end product. Peles had no end product - had he squared it to a striker to score fair enough, but he kicked it out of play - no end product - no threat. Pele only beat himself by doing the dummy when it was not appropriate due to the angle of the throughpass (contrast Blomqvists GOAL).
-
Cruyff's 'pass' was a poor cross which did not result in a goal, but still the TRICK he performed was regarded as a success BECAUSE he beat his man.
'The Pelé runaround move is a football move designed to get around an opponent', now did he or did he not beat the keeper with the dummy? did he not get a shot away? The shot is, like Cruyff's cross after the turn, already part of a different skill, so why does Pele have to score for the DUMMY to be regarded as a successful?
-
@DarkViIIain Absolute rubbish - Pele went past the keeper to score - did he pass? no - he shot - and missed, Cruyff passed succesully and had an end product - Pele didnt. Of course the trick was tainted you clown. Oh, and to correct you, Bolmqvists 'goal' was original compared to Peles cos it was a goal - the trick might not have been original - but the fact it was a goal was. You are grasping at straws now.....
Pele fail.....he missed !
