André Martel is a marine biologist with the Canadian Museum of Nature. His specialty is molluscs—one of the largest groups of animals on the planet with more than 100 000 species. His research is shedding light on the impacts of introduced species on native fauna. An example is the zebra mussel, which is an invasive species that has invaded freshwater systems in eastern North America and caused considerable environmental and economic damage.
