Lady Margaret and Sweet William
Shirley Collins
The Power Of The True Love Knot
Child Ballad 74
Lady Margaret dies, commits suicide in most versions of the song, soon after seeing William with his new bride. Her ghost comes to him on his wedding night and he later tells his wife of the awful dream he had either of Lady Margaret drowning in blood or his hall covered in blood depending on the version. William goes to see Lady Margaret and is let in to see her in her coffin. He kisses and dies.
They are buried side by side and a rose grows from one grave, a green briar from the other eventually tying into a true love's knot. The ending is much like the end of Barbara Allen.
