The Tenerife airport disaster was the collision of two Boeing 747 airliners on the runway of Los Rodeos Airport (now known as Tenerife North Airport) on the Spanish island of Tenerife, one of the Canary Islands. With 583 fatalities, the crash remains the worst accident in aviation history.

As a kid i had a pretty disturbing habit of reading disaster books on subjects such as Estonia or Titanic. On reading a airplane book and reading this and seeing the surprisingly detailed picture of one huge jumbo smashing into another and seeing things such as "all people on KLM fight were INCINERATED" and such i was haunted by nightmares for weeks kept picturing it in my mind. Im being deadly serious. I really think this is the Titanic of air disasters. Rip everyone who died...

Oh my god this is horrible!!!!!! i can't imagine! when im scared on a plane im scared of turbulence, i never think the plane is going to collide with another one on the ground or in the sky! :S

@jman280292 The NTSB (national transportation safety board) called this the "CRASH OF THE CENTURY". There has only been one century of flight. No one could put it any worse.

That's harshly put. Regardless of how *arrogant* Van Zanten may have been, he truly believed he had been given clearance by the tower, who incidentally, were listening to a football match on the radio at the time.

Wasn't it the arrogance of the KLM capt that caused this disaster? Flight deck communication changed after this. The capt stopped being all knowing after this and now has to take heed of the co-pilot.

Only if the KLM didn't refuel --- they would have had time to lift off :(

@jman280292 Tititanic was FAR from the worst maritime disaster, Have you ever heard of the MV Wilhelm Gustloff? Of course it is debatable as to if it was a "disaster" as it was deliberate but nonetheless almost 10000 people lost their life on a single ship sinking.
