@PeekaPeep - In fairness to Prince, Rick was already an established star when Prince first hit the scene. And I would say that around this time, Prince was just starting to understand the art of performing. He realized this when he realized that The Time was kicking his ass on stage every night. But you could see that, around 1985-86, he really started to polish his stage act. Subsequently, he became the best on stage IMO
And he didn't have to be on cocaine to do it.

I was just to the left of center about 2 rows back. The crowds were so crazy and we were crushed together so tight, I was lifted off the ground and just swayed above it about 4 inches for the entire concert...

I apologize mat4mckay for not being clear
amongst MY PEERS as an African American no major comparisons of the artist were made we just had alot of "NATURALLY TALENTED" artist and enjoyed each INDIVIDUAL talent.
Ex. Sam Cooke better than Marvin Gaye or the Temps better than The Impressions & so on..... "NO!!" We just enjoyed their INDIVIDUALITY... That's old school appreciation. I personally liked the Beatles & Rolling Stones... LOL!

@jamrich - That isn't even close to the truth. People debated who was better Clapton or Hendrix constantly or who was better The Beatles or The Rolling Stones and on and on. Also the social groups like the mods and rockers fought like crazy you are talking from an old selective mind. Also if people didn't compare or criticize artists then what's the point? Criticism leads to higher art.
