The Old Man and the Sea is a classic that most of us had to read in high school, or maybe college. Santiago, the old man, takes a voyage far out into the sea in his little 15 foot long boat, and bites off more than he can chew when he hooks a giant marlin.

I can't get over how much I love Hemingway. His writing style blows me away, and his stories aren't one with twists and turns, but they keep me gripped regardless. Here's a more in depth review on my thoughts.

  • The first words I read that changed the way I read, A Farewell to Arms:

"Troops went by the house and down the road and the dust they raised powdered the leaves of the trees. The trunks of the trees too were dusty and the leaves fell early that year and we saw the troops marching along the road and the dust rising and leaves, stirred by the breeze, falling and the soldiers marching and afterward the road bare and white except for the leaves.”

Not a typical Hemingway sentence, but poetic.

  • @emmaleighbug damn right it is. Wow, nice pick. I'm seriously obsessed with Hemingway, I'm just kind of ashamed it took me until I was 23 to really discover the power of his work. I'll definitely be tapping into A Farewell to Arms soon.

  • A Farewell to Arms was his best novel....

  • This book is a legend

  • Jesus was on the cross for 3 days, or was he? GOD damit hahahahaha

  • ...but from reading his sentences, which aren't jumbled with complicated words that only half of the literate world can understand, but by taking simple words that anyone can read, and combining them in a way that makes them beautiful. I love to find myself reading something, stopping and going back to reread it, because for some reason, if you slow down and read it word by word...it's like your grandfather reading to you, or like an artist creating something true right in front of you.

  • Personally, I don't think Hemingway has such a reputation because he was so ground-breaking, not that he wasn't...

The first time I read Hemingway was The Sun Also Rises my junior year of high school. Reading it then, I looked more into the story, because that's as deep as I looked. Since then, I have become an even more avid reader and writer, and have come to appreciate his style. And it didn't come from learning about his background and influence...
