This is going to take 4 posts to answer in full.

(1) With SMT2 (Symmetric Multi Threading), each processor core appears to be 2 logical processors. Each logical processor can run a thread of work. So a 64 core system has up to 128 logical processors and up to 128 simultaneous threads in a single partition. AIX 5.3 is limited to SMT2, supporting 64 cores and 128 logical processors or threads for a single partition on POWER5, POWER6 or POWER7.

(2) With AIX 6 running in POWER7 mode, and SMT4, those 64 cores appear to be 256 logical processors. That is the current maximum capability of AIX 6.1 TL4 Service Pack 3 on POWER7.
