Flying that little beastie upside down that close to the ground? Those aren't fixed wheels with spats---they're the pilot's BALLS!!!!! :-DDDDDD

Today is the first time I've actually read all the comments posted here. It seems such a pity that, with a few notable exceptions, most are pure rubbish. Everyone who ever flew any of the 23 Gee Bee aeroplanes built were not killed. In fact, 8 people died in Gee Bee ships, and only 2 of them in the Model R ones. With possibly one exception, all crashes were the result of pilot error, and not design flaws. A pity that these demanding aeroplanes have such a poor reputation.

Always been fascinated with the GeeBee's ......they are immensely ugly, yet...totally beautiful!!

@mikekiedro The only time Delmar Benjamin chrahed the GeeBee was during his visit to Germany, and it was barely a crash. The runway he was to arrive in on was too short and one of the wheel pants tore off, luckily they replaced it oh-so-quickly.

@jpatt1000 It would be great to see it fly again, but Kermit is scared to fly it, so we won't see this R-2 in the sky anymore.

its a shame no one flies a GeeBee anymore. Such an iconic plane.
-
not a easy aircraft to take off or land, Jimmy Doolittle and a couple others were about the only ones besides this pilot Delmar Benjamin

@jonimuc It is exhibited at Fantasy Of Flight. Kemit Weeks the owner plans on flying it and his model Z when the test of the aileron flutter are complete. They diagnosed the planes with severe flutter at high speeds and attributed Lowell Bayles death to it.

@AlexTrc I recently visited the Balboa Air & Space Museum in San Diego, California father's day weekend, 2011. There is a GeeBee that looks to be identical to this one on display there. I believe it is a replica, but appears to be fully functional.
Somebody here knows who is the pilot of this Gee Bee??? i will apreciete any information about him and about where is this plane is located

@AlexTrc The pilot at this air show was Delmar Benjamin, the plane is not flying anymore, it is, as fas as could investigate, exhibited in a museum in Florida, perhaps Fantasy of Flight?
