A small piece of calcium metal is put into a graduated cylinder containing water. The calcium metal reacts with water producing bubbles of pure hydrogen gas, plus the reaction turns the water into calcium hydroxide also known as 'lime water'.

The equation of the reaction:
Ca(s) + 2H2O(l) → Ca(OH)2(aq) + H2(g)

  • Pretty good demonstration of Calcium metal. Though i advise you try to cut the calcium metal in half showing the shiny metal area first, because it becomes much clear that it is calcium. Most people now a days think milk contains calcium metal, when the fact that it contains Calcium carbonate.

  • your welcome!!!
