If you have never heard Baka Beyond before prepare for something of unique and unusual beauty; if you know Baka Beyond you will no doubt agree that Beyond The Forest is their best work yet. The haunting, mystical vocals on the album were recorded on a solar-powered 8-track machine in the middle of the Cameroon rainforest which has been inhabited by the Baka Pygmies, an ethnic group of hunter-gatherers, for thousands of years. At night time the Baka Pygmy women perform powerful ritual singing (yelli) to ensure a successful hunt. Back in the UK, Baka Beyond leader Martin Cradick deconstructed the original interwoven vocal lines and replaced some voices with bass and acoustic guitar. The result is a stunningly beautiful, other-worldly album. As well as offering a rare glimpse into an exquisite disappearing musical culture, buying this album also directly supports the Baka who face various problems such as being disenfranchised from the forest.

this is horrible, to put some bad pop or what ever music with the baka tribe singing. their music is great to listen to on its own, with this crap in the background it spoils the whole point of their music.

@MrSebyBrooks then my brother, you are missing the point of music. its here to bring us together, its language that we all understand.

And actually, this reggae and congo music is quite remarkable, it is like seeing grand grandfather hugging his offspring. Because the folk music of Jamaica was highly influenced by Congo people and their drumming styles. They came there to work years before pop music developed on Jamaica. So it is really not that bizzare it is veeeery interesting.

@MrSebyBrooks I think your missing the point. This is a collaboration of musicians from various areas of the world making music with the Baka. It isn't merely putting "Bad pop or whatever" over the top, and as stated on the video it is the Baka themselves that have inspired the music.

we can only interact as humans. we play music with the baka. we play music inspired by the baka. it makes us feel good. we want to share that with the world. when any money is made the baka have their share. no one knows the consequences of that.
