So I finally hit my first 40 with a chain of Ponyta that was totally random and unplanned
And while resetting, my finger slips and I go into a patch...and break it.

8D Sure.
My advice: wait 'till four of the same patches shake. That's the best advice can give. There's always a chance it'll still break, but at least you know you're doing your absolute best to not let it break.
Remember, only go into the patch if it's four steps away. Other than that, follow the other minor rules and you should reach 40. If it's any consolement, it sometimes takes me several days and over 20 times of trying before I get it to 40. o_>
