Every Wednesday morning at The Galloway School, children and adults gather to witness music being made. The music makers who sit or stand in front of the audience are a diverse group: students, young and old, teachers, and parents. In this video, Officer Barry Miller of the Atlanta Police Department, who guides our cars in carpool, plays the dulcimer. The types of music that are presented at these concerts are numerous and varied, including fingerpick ragtime guitar, classical piano and violin, jug band, and the Native American flute, to name a few. Few of these musicians are professionals; they make and share their music because it is their passion.

Linda Floyd, the organizer of the Wednesday Morning Concert Series, writes: Numerous studies have shown a direct correlation between exposure to classical music and an increase in brainpower, particularly in young children. Music is fertilizer to the brain as well as food for the soul, as one study says. In response to these studies, Galloway launched a music initiative, called GMI the Galloway Music Initiative in 1999. Over the last nine years, The Galloway Music initiative has included before-school listening/concerts, distribution of recordings through classrooms, integrating music into classroom lessons and providing music listening lists.

The results of the initiative, she writes, have been spectacular. Teachers, students and parents have responded enthusiastically to the musical mornings. Classroom teachers have indicated positive behavior following mornings that start with musical experiences. The students gain experience in focused listening, exposure to many genres of music and a learning experience in appropriate concert behavior.
