Repeatedly during the interview, Star Congolese Bassist Ngouma Lokito asked "WHY...Americans don't dance to African music." Pointing out the African roots of most American popular music, Ngouma Lokito says God means for all music to be everywhere...
On top of that, I believe the white man has a deep seated fear of the African and will not "openly" acknowledge the gifts that come from the cradle of civilization. That said, and paradoxically, white America is the first to co-opt/adopt/emulate all things African American in nature.
I couldn't have said it better myself, you are spot on. In addition to your statement, the current music culture here tends to create a strong sense of conformity, and any deviation from that is met with ridicule. It's a tough market to break into, this culture favors hard edged street savvy bravado, instead of capable musicianship. But the relatively few who appreciate this music are diehard fans, and welcome any group who visits the U.S!
why? Because most everything in the USA is geared toward mass consumption. this leads to the promotion of medocrity to appeal to the lowest common denominator. Sad.
