it's one of those animes that tries to break away from the usual "light hearted" theme of most other animes, to a more melancholic one that's more appeal-able to western critics. it gives this eerie kind of atmosphere too. reminds me of last exile.

p.s. their small province (forgot what it's called) is just like how the ryukyu islands is to japan.
