Just a beginner, Trying to play some Hungarian folkmusic on the bawu flute

From the wikipedia: The bawu is a Chinese wind instrument. Although shaped like a flute, it is actually a free reed instrument, with a single metal reed. It is played in a transverse (horizontal) manner. It has a pure, clarinet-like timbre and its playing technique incorporates the use of much ornamentation, particularly bending tones.

Although the bawu likely originated in the Yunnan province of southwest China, it has become a standard instrument throughout China, used in modern Chinese compositions for traditional instrument ensembles. It is typically used as a solo instrument, and is often featured in film scores; it is sometimes also heard in popular music recordings.

Although the bawu is still predominantly performed in China, it has in recent years been adopted by European composers and performers. Rohan Leach from England; Rapheal De Cock from Belgium and Herman Witkam from the Netherlands have all taken the instrument in new directions.

  • you play so well. is bawu better to play with than dizi?

  • @GigiHappyy Thanks. I think the bawu is a easier to play than dizi. I prefer the tone of the bawu, but its range is limited to only one octave

  • Thanks, I'm glad that you liked it. It's quite easy to play the bawu (well, of course to sound like those great chinse masters takes a lot of practice I guess). I made this video a couple of day after the bawu arrived, but I had some experience with other woodwind folk instruments. It is in G (there is a letter G written on it), but when all the holes are covered it sounds D (it is G when the 3 bottom holes are open).

  • @monkeyeagle the reason you may think it sounds like a bagpipe is because the BaWu is actually not a flute. it is a reed instrument. similar to the clarinet, but played horizontally.

  • you play really well. did u learn to play by yourself? do you know hoe to play dizi? sorry for all these questions. i just bought a dizi and fnd it quite hard to self learn.

  • glad to see such amazing sound from a beginner. I just purchased a bawu in the key of low F and have been quite impatiently waiting for it to arrive. What key is yours in? (C or E im guessing.)

  • Very well done! You almost make the flute sound like a bagpipe at times!

  • you sound amazing for just a beginner
