uh... sorry for ranting, I do have a real question: I'm having a real problems coming up with designs for my characters, how do you come up with ideas like the helmet / gun belt on the first one? I'm finding it really difficult to design stuff, it's not that I cant get what's in my head on the paper, I just cant get anything into my head, if that makes sense.

-- and this continues all the way up until A-levels (16yrs-18yrs old) when you turn up at university or college without the proper, fundamental skill to do what is required of you. I have to take outside classes just to make myself better at light, shade, line formation etc, because school didn't teach me right, teaching kids to draw is what art lessons in school should be, not doing collages, they shouldn't let us touch the finger paints until we can draw properly.
-
I love these videos, they're so helpful, all that stuff you were saying about fundamentals is so true, you don't really get the right information and help without going to learn it from a source outside of conventional schools.
The problem with the education system in the UK is that they don't teach you any fundamentals, they tell you "the eyes are in the middle of the head" but that doesn't help when it comes to improving your skill --

I have watched these videos for inspiration in concept art, even though my mayor is in 3D and I have to say these videos helps a lot. Even in my 3D related work. So if you are a concept artist looking for deeper understanding or a 3D student looking for inspiration these videos has much to teach.
Thank you.

My 3D design teacher once told me never to put models of sexy half naked women into our portfolio. 1. It is immature and unprofessional. 2. You won't get the job because of your lack of originality. All creative artist will in one or many cases create sexy half naked girls with guns.

@GOINxPOSTAL Not everyone is cut out for that. School provides more structure: get up, go to school, do your homework, practice through specific projects and exercises. You have faculty to turn to when you have questions. So really, both self-teaching and traditional teaching have their own upsides and downsides. Depends entirely on what sort of environment you really need in order to succeed.
-
@GOINxPOSTAL While I completely agree that art school isn't always necessary, at the same time, we have to realize that the self-teaching route isn't for everyone, either. To pursue art on your own requires an extreme amount of discipline, strict routines, and a lot of trying to figure out on your own if you're even doing things right.
-
I understand that going to school for art will help you a lot, but it isn't needed tbh, some of the best artists I know have not gone to a school for art, and the ones I do know that have, arn't any better then the ones that haven't. No matter if you went to school or spent your free time working on a hobby, it all just takes time, and practice....a lot of practice.

im so much more fluid with just a 2B and some paper... whenever i try to use my tablet, i cant control the smoothness or pressure of the stylus to the tablet and get weird results. go back to the drawing board with traditional medium or keep practicing digital medium? fine art major btw
@ryofulance: Thank you for watching our videos. :) As for your question, IP is Intellectual Property. Hope this helps.

Thank you for all the comments guys!
@IdontWatchIsee: Fundamentals are the building block of all art and design. Topics such as perspective, anatomy, lighting, composition, color theory, etc – the typical courses you take at design schools. Knowing your fundamentals will advance your learning speed dramatically (because you will know “why” you are doing certain things…verses drawing/designing randomly). Hope this answers your question. :)
