As Too Close For Comfort was nearing the end of its third season, declining ratings made it seem likely that ABC would not renew it for a fourth season. As a result, showrunners Arne Sultan and Earl Barret decided to use the last two episodes of the season to showcase two of their pilots, neither of which was picked up. Although ABC did cancel TCFC, it continued in first-run syndication for an additional three seasons.
"Don't Rock the Boat" aired 4/28/83 and featured Dick Van Patten as a 52-year-old widower named Arthur who owns a boat repair business at the Oxnard Marina with his two grown sons, Les (Peter Marc Jacobson) and Billy (Jonathan Prince). 17 years after the death of his wife, Arthur finally decides to remarry... to a 26-year-old woman named Pamela (Pamela Newman).
Ted Knight and Nancy Dussault play supporting roles in this episode, with the other regulars appearing only in the opening scene.
