This is what driving our Chevrolet HHR is currently like, note the gauge flipping up and down, the lights appearing and dissappearing on the warning panel, and the error messages flashing on the display. A short list is
Power Steering
Service ESC
Service Traction
Traction off
ESC off
ABS off
Dash lights that come on, normally the security light on the extreme left of the panel comes on, and stays on, as does the traction control on the extreme right. The handbrake light turns on and off as it pleases, the ABS light come on, on occasion as well. The Check Engine light did come on, for a couple of days, and then went off again.
My HHR is having a similar problem that I think the Chevy dealership caused. It all started after we replaced the keyless remote entry for it and ever since then the security light and check engine light comes on. when the security light comes on, if the transmission doesn't start shifting hard right after, it usually will start after a mile or two. Also the gages will freak out like yours are doing and I get error messages. Have taken it to three places and no one has figured it out yet.

If you unhook the negitive battery post clamp and let it set for at least 20 minutes or take it to O'Rielly's and have them clear computer it may get rid of problem. Mine was only getting 18mpg,the factory had put a relay in the wrong slot, but after I put it in the right slot I had the computer rebooted and the MPG went up to 31.7-34.2 MPG. Unfortunately the 07 HHR is ethanol sensitive,I made the mistake of using Heet and my computer went nuts.Use the same station that gives best MPG.

I have the same problem on my 2006 hhr with 54K miles. Gauges going crazy but showing POWER STEERING streaming across info line.
Pickup a P.S unit off ebay for $50.00 used came off a colbat 2009 with 17K. Haven't installed yet, waiting for better weather here in Colorado. Hope it fix's the intermittent problem.

Go to an autoparts store and have them hook up the scan tool, it's free. My check engine light was on and traction control as well. Turned out to be the cam shaft position sensor. $50. I went ahead and bought the deluxe scan tool for $199. It will also read codes on my '99 Suburban.

I have never had that problem in my HHR but I used to have a TrailBlazer and all of the warning lights and notices etc. came up on the dash and would not stop dinging. (I did not try driving it but that probably would have happened with gauges.) Turns out the battery was low! Maybe consider that with your car...?
