An edited excerpt from the 1998 documentary "Witch City" featuring Laurie Cabot - the "Official Witch of Salem." Historian Stephen Nisenbaum and Rev. Russ Ely dispute links between the practice of witchcraft today and the victims of the Salem Witchcraft Trials of 1692.

  • "All publicity"... Right, and the stickers people put on the streets saying "What you need is JESUS!" and those people trying to convert everyone they see is what?

  • My grandmother was a Spanish Witch and was born in 1906 died in 1984 she was one of the people who taught me to not judge. Who is this man to say she is foney? this religion is just as important as his.

  • i agree that Laurie Cabot is very showy, but who cares? the attention she gets is promoting a positive movement, and it's promoting her business. as a business owner she has the right to do so. i'm not a big fan of the Cabot tradition, but i think that Laurie is a smart person trying to do the right thing and we all owe it to her for making Salem, MA the "Mecca of Witches."

  • It looks to me like these men don't want competition. I bet she had more followers than that minister's church. LOL!!!

  • As soon as someone looks like a witch that hollywood would give us I start to doubt they're really a witch.

  • @BelleNex Indeed :). Silence is always powerful. Not only does it not give the wrong people info, but a monthly day of silence increases brain activity and thinking capabilities to the individual. If (Goddess forbid) that ever happened again, they'd have to kill me, so it would be pointless.

  • @celticbattleaxe And that is exactly what a witch who had taken the oath of silence would do. ;)

  • @BelleNex Indeed, friend :) Long time no see.

What I find interesting is that Giles Cory was perhaps the only person who knew about Witchcraft in Salem (we think), but he never said anything about it. So, he was pressed to death with stone layers on his chest. All he would say was "more weight" until he died by asphyxiation.

  • I don't like the Christian preachers either, but this is over the top. How can you be a martyr for a religion that didn't even exist when you died? They're all of full of it, both her and the preachers.

  • laurie cabot u inspire me so much i so wishes to meet u:-)

  • I dont think the guys speaking against her are listening to what she is saying. She is not claiming the women killed were pagan. She is saying their deaths helped to inspire the fight for religious tolerance. People need to learn to listen.

  • @TheIchiban1974 Yes, it will educate them that all witches or pagans wear black and have funky70's hair and wear symbols on their faces.... There are LOADS of really devout pagans and witches I know personally that don't even wear robes. She is an inspirational person though...
