Fretless banjos just sound different. No better or worse because of the frets. That part just depends on the sound you want to get when you play. No, you don't need to use a truss rod in the neck. On all the old banjos, the neck just narrowed out and went straight to the back of the pot (I believe it used to be called the dowel rod), where it had one of the bolts from the brackets screwed into it through the rim. I haven't looked, but I'm sure you can find some pictures on Google of old banjos

im building a banjo and im not very familliar with them does a fretless sound just as good cuz that would make this build way easier and cheaper also do you have to have a truss rod?
