They weren't a causal factor in his death. You use ropes to save you, in case you should fall. But you have to use the ropes in the correct way, with the correct equipment and the correct knots. He didn't secure himself the way he should have secured himself, resulting in entangled ropes, ropeburn, and his death. The ropes weren't a causal factor, his (for his last jump) bad use of equipment was.
