Maggie Teyte introduces and sings Reynaldo Hahn's "Si Mes Vers Avaient Des Ailes" with orchestra. Dame Maggie Teyte, well known as Debussy's favorite Mélisande, studied with the perfectionist Jean de Reszke in Paris for about six years from 1904. Thanks to the solid technical base she received from him she was able to sing well into her eighties. Indeed Maggie Teyte often said it was not that the singers of the Golden Age were better than those of our present day, but they had a better technique. Maggie Teyte is a prime example of how a singer with excellent technical training can sing with minimal loss of voice into old age. Teyte's voice did not deteriorate with age; rather it became richer with infinite hues and colors and depth of expression. One thing for sure, when you hear Maggie Teyte, there is magic.
