@GavinGill07 In the West we have something called Separation of Church and State. You are free to practice your beliefs within your house of worship, no the Bible should not be banned, and the Quran should not be banned. However, certain parts of the bible should be outlawed, as should certain parts of the Quran, and any other religion conflict with national law. National law supercedes religious law. They don't like it? They can take their case to court, thats how things work here in the West.
@GavinGill07 So if someone chooses to engage in an act that doesn't harm anyone it is their legal right correct? So why is polygamous marriage not allowed in Canada? Does it harm you if 2 or more women "choose" to marry one man? Does that infringe on your rights? No, it doesn't and yet it is still outlawed in the West, do you understand that? The burqa did not just start out as discriminatory, it still is discriminatory today.
@Legacy285 The fact that it STARTED out as a discriminatory piece of clothing is irrelevant; if no one's rights are being infringed in THIS day and age by wearing a Burqa here in the West, there's nothing wrong with it. In Canada, freedom of expression trumps most - if not all - laws. If a woman chooses to express herself by wearing an article of clothing (and she isn't harming anyone), it's her legal right.
@Legacy285 So if someone wears an article of clothing for the sake of fashion, like many Muslim women here do, it should be outlawed because extremists on the other side of the planet use it as a form of discrimination? Should certain words be outlawed as well just because they started out is discriminatory slurs? Should the Bible be banned just because it's pages are wrought with discrimination?
@GavinGill07 Ok, Polygamous marriage is outlawed in the West correct? That means that even if a women "chooses" to engage in a polygamous marriage, it is against the law in the west, correct? Now, in the west discriminatory practices based on gender have largely become outlawed as well. Therefore, the burqa being a discriminatory piece of clothing by design and concept, is incompatible with western law and society. So even if a women says I am "choosing" to wear it, that does not make it legal.
@Legacy285 Yeah, I follow but I don't see what this has to do with what the point that I'm trying to get across. Polygamous marriage is outlawed therefore that part of the Quran should be ignored here in the West, the same way the homophobic and sexist parts of the Bible are. But again, we're talking the burqa here. If a woman willingly chooses to wear one, no one's rights are being violated, and no pre-existing law is being broken, she should be allowed to wear one.
@GavinGill07 Let me ask you a question, and then I will tell you why I believe you are wrong. I dont know if you know, but Muslims also believe in polygamous marriage, the Quran permits it. Many Muslim women will say that they are ok with their husband living in France to have 6 wives. But they are not allowed to practice this belief in the West, do you know why? Because it conflicts with WESTERN LAW. It is not compatible with Western Society. So did you understand this part?
@Legacy285 You're stretching a wee bit. I'm not advocating for the extremists that force women to wear the burqa, but the women that willingly choose to do so. Here in Canada, many Muslim women choose to wear it. I hardly count that as discrimination of the sexes. It should be illegal to FORCE women to wear it, sure, but it outright banning anyone from wearing it (even those who want to wear it) is ridiculous.
@GavinGill07 In France, it is against the law to restrict a women's rights based on her faith. The Burqa does exactly that. This is why France has taken it upon itself to ban this discriminatory piece of clothing, and it should be applauded for doing so. Just because in the West there is tolerance amongst minorities and religions does not mean you can import your traditions that discriminate between sexes. You wanna come to the West? Then you treat your woman as an equal. Period.
@GavinGill07 Answer this question for me please. Does it offend you if 2 women decide to marry one man? Does it infringe on your rights at all?
