Description: Tick-borne encephalitis or TBE is an inflammation of the brain. TBE viruses are transmitted through a tick's saliva at the site of the bite. They proliferate within the body and reach in about 20 to 30 % of cases the brain with the blood stream. There different inflammatory reactions take place. In less severe cases only the meninges are affected. This meningitis will mostly heal up within two weeks. In more severe cases the viruses attack the entire brain. If also the spinal cord or the nerve roots are affected this may lead to death in about one to two percent of the cases. Up to 4 days after the tick bite, adults can be vaccinated with antibodies and the course of the disease be attenuated.
