EZtoon is a black and white animation software, great if you want simplicity. You can also use pivot stickfigure animator, which is really fun, but gives you less freedom.

But taking the time to mess around with flash is probably best

Actually, that's pretty cool. You know, my writing process goes sorta like this. I wrote something and then a couple chapters later I used something from the previous chapter and it just worked out. I didn't even plan for that to happen. It was pretty cool.
