I definitely agree regarding the nerd-turned-superhero cliche'. What's great about these old herd boiled vigilantes is that there's no real alter ego to mask the powers, they are who they are. Wesley Dodds doesn't overcome his shy nerdiness to become the Sandman, he 'is' the Sandman. And that is very new compared to typical tough guys like the Shadow and the Crimson Avenger.
