Part 2 of 2. This tutorial will show you how to set up a front and side image plane based on some concept art. The image planes are created in Photoshop and then imported into Maya, where you have access to a range of attributes to enhance your modeling workflow. In part 2, the process of importing image planes and exploring their attributes is shown.

  • Proper Tutorials! thank you!!! :)

  • @LiamCarlinTests You're welcome!

  • is there anyway of having the image planes become invisible when viewed from behind? or to be made partially transparent when viewed through the perspective view do you know?

  • @hannahjbarton If the Alpha Gain doesn't make them fade in the perspective view i'm not sure if you can actually make them transparent. I just turn off the cameras in the perspective view to hide the image planes (show - cameras). In regards to the orthographic views, there is a way if you know MEL or Python and want to script your own tool! There's also tutorials around the net for setting up back / front image planes for particular objects. Hope this helps.

  • Does the source image have to be in bitmap format in order to use the alpha gain? I'm using Maya 7 and my source image has a white background, and only saved as a jpg in photoshop. Now, when I use the that jpg image with the white background, the alpha gain will only turn the white darker or lighter shades of gray. The image however does not become transparent using the alpha gain. The alpha gain does nothing in my case. Do you know what I did wrong?

  • In my experience i have had trouble with jpg's showing up at all so i would recommend saving your image planes as bitmaps, targas or tiffs.

  • finally an explenation how to transfer photoshop cs to maya thank youuuu d(n_n)b

  • @totopoo123 most likely when you opened the maya file at home, the image planes werent linked to the images with the same path as they were at your school. since maya can't open the images, it displays nothing. all you have to do is relink the images. open up the attribute editor, select the image plane, then go to the image name bar. click the little folder icon and re-navigate to the image file. should fix your problem.

  • very helpful, now only if u could show us how to make the low poly head and body as well if possible :) with texturing too, lol

  • can someone please help, i started a project at my collage and inserted some images, but when i tried to open it at home the pictures were'nt on maya anymore and there was these green lines in the shape of a square in their place.

  • great.....

  • Thanks!
