It sounds like it's stepper driven. I'm sure they're using some type of encoder feedback as well. Are the amps an off-the-shelf design or were they custom designed for this robot?

It has brushless DC motors with encoders.

The controllers/amplifiers are the key-part of this robot and were entirely custom designed.
