@Cordy712 So.... Evidently it's important for the gradient to be black and white and solid. The other tutorial mentioned that, and fixed the problem. Hooray!

Hmmm. This tutorial doesn't work for me. The gradient didn't work, it turned the whole photo red. When I used the lasso tool and applied a lens blur, the preview screen was white, and nothing changed. :/
