Chechen human rights defender, Natalia Estemirova, was found brutally murdered soon after she had been forcibly taken from her home on Wednesday morning.

Estemirova was investigating an alleged campaign of house-burnings by government-backed militias in Chechnya. She was well-known for her unwavering activism against impunity.

The Russian government has developed a poor reputation for allowing the abuse and murder of journalists and human rights defenders to go unpunished. Estemirova's murder takes place two years after investigative journalist Anna Politkovskaya was assassinated.

  • RIP Dear woman, you were a great human being.

  • I can only assume that those human rights activists who were murdered by Kadyrovs men (Their words not mine, though I assume they are terrorists too) are all wrong. Kadyrov would never kill his own people? He has already openly said he would!

  • Come to Chechnya? Are you out of your mind? The country where human rights activists end up in the boot of cars? Human rights groups have openly said that Kadyrov and his men are responsible for the killing of human rights activists (Who presumably are terrorists in your book) Not to mention in your own words Kadyrov is an ex terrorist himself!

Welcome to a state run by an ex terrorist, er no thanks!

  • kadyrov is chechen, so are his men, so was his father who was killed by the terrorists. in the first war kadryrov and his father fought along side the terroists. this clearly changed. if you are implying that they like going around killing hundreds of innocent civilians that come from their own country, sorry mate, i am not buying that shit, neither can i be bothered to argue it. terrorists kill school children, surely they dont give a fuck about some journalist.

  • And define "terrorists" How exactly do we know they are "terrorists" considering there is no free speech, no independent verification of the deaths of these people and no free press?

Its ironic you say this considering that the people who are trying to bring this information to light seem to end up in the back of vehicles with bullets in their heads. Yes I am sure the "terrorists" must be behind this not that nice Mr Kadyrov.

  • And have Americans been held to account for their actions? Yes. Have American been sentenced? Yes.

Has Kadyrov or any of his stooges been held to account for any of their actions? Nope. Will they ever? Nope.

Yes I am sure this lady and many other thousands who have "disappeared" or been murdered are "terrorists"

As I say, any comparison is just just plain insanity. Kadyrov in comparison to Obama or Bush? Give me a break!

  • its not ignorance in the extreme, americans bombed the shit out of iraq and afganistan, and its cost thousands of civilian lives. kadyrovs people may have killed hundreds, but most are terrorists. i think it would be just as bad if a civilian dies as a result of a bombing or a death squad. its not ignorance in extreme.

  • terrorists arent fighting for anyone. basayev killed hundreds of chechen civilians as did the other warlords. i dont think free speech is chechnyas primary concern now. people just want this war to be over as quick as possble and that is what kadyrov is doing. dont forget his "death squads" kill terroists.

  • Yes but we have things like investigations, people brought to account, compensation, reconstruction.

We dont have private armies, death squads, private prisons etc........

To even compare Kadyrov's actions to Americas in Iraq or Afghanistan is ignorance in the extreme.
