The United Kingdom general election of 1987 was held on 11 June 1987 and was the third consecutive victory for the Conservative Party under the leadership of Margaret Thatcher. She was the first Prime Minister since the 2nd Earl of Liverpool to lead a party to three successive election victories, a record subsequently equalled by Tony Blair.
The Conservative government had survived industrial disputes with mine workers (1984--85) and print unions (1985--86), had weathered the 1986 Westland affair even with the resignation of Michael Heseltine and Leon Brittan, and the overall economy was strong. The Labour party at the time was slowly returning to a more centrist stance under new leader Neil Kinnock, and expected to fare much better than it had in the 1983 election. The main aim of the Labour party was, arguably, not to win a majority of parliamentary seats but simply to re-establish themselves as the main progressive centre-left alternative to the Conservatives, after the rise of the SDP forced Labour onto the defence. Indeed, the Labour party succeeded in doing so with this general election. The SDP and the Liberals renewed their SDP--Liberal Alliance but co-leaders David Owen and David Steel could not agree whether to support either major party in the event of a hung parliament. This turned out to be a purely academic problem, as the Conservatives were re-elected with a reduced majority of 102 seats. The failure of the SDP--Liberal Alliance to break through the electoral barriers ultimately resulted in the merger of the two parties in 1988 to become the Social and Liberal Democrats (latterly Liberal Democrats).

My channel is one of the most prolific from Poland. With almost one film per day, one may be forgiven for thinking I do nothing else but I do have a day job as well. I have produced around 1,600 original films, most in English but also in Polish, French, Italian, Spanish and the occasional hint of German and Hebrew. My big interest in life is travel and history but I have also placed films on other subjects

Please feel free to ask questions in the public area or to comment on things you disagree with. Sometimes there are mistakes because I speak without preparation. If I see the mistakes myself, I make this clear in the text. Please also leave a star rating!

There are a number of films here on the packaging industry. This is because I am the publisher of Central and Eastern European Packaging -- http://www.ceepackaging.com - the international platform for the packaging industry in this region focusing on the latest innovations, trends, design, branding, legislation and environmental issues with in-depth profiles of major industry achievers.

Most people may think packaging pretty boring but it possibly effects your life more than you really imagine!

Central and Eastern European Packaging examines the packaging industry throughout this region, but in particular in the largest regional economies which are Russia, Germany, Poland, Czech Republic, Ukraine and Austria. That is not to say that the other countries are forgotten, they are not, but obviously there is less going on. However the fact that there are so many travel related films here is not from holidays but from business trips attending trade fairs around the region. Every packaging trade fair is a new excuse to make another film!

  • Sounds like Land of Hope and Glory which is found within Pomp and Circumstance March No1 by Elgar.

If I recall correctly this was broadcast just after the polls closed on General Election night.

  • @professor69guru It must have been after the polls closed because they say the number of seats obtained!

  • I used to love spitting image

  • Can anyone tell me what is the music which plays when Burnett just begins to crawl? I know it is super famous, and probably every British person knows it, and I have been looking for its name for ages!

  • The puppet is the Mitterrand puppet, as the British ambassador to the USA. The Brezhnev puppet was still in use as the stock "Eastern European Bland Bureaucrat", which it had always been in a sense since Brezhnev died nearly two years before the show started.

  • @SniperMaske Yes, having seen the Mitterrand puppet in other episodes I'm pretty sure it's him now. Thanks.

  • @The1985Channel Come to think of it, Brezhnev was already dead, so I would stick with François Mitterrand, which the puppet resembles more anyway.

  • @The1985Channel I’d say François Mitterrand or Leonid Brezhnev, but I’m not too sure and I don’t know if it would make that much sense. :/

  • Who is that stood on the right of Maggie from 4:58 onwards.
