UPDATED DESCRIPTION 31/12/2011 Dodgy "fix" = disable upnp on your router.

UPDATE: Disable upnp so you never become a host and the issue goes away. Please only do this if you are having issues because if everyone does it then there won't be any good hosts left. Also messing with the wrong settings in your modem/router could render your internet useless so use caution and I take no responsibility if you break something. Every router/modem is different so I can't provide any info on how to disable upnp, sorry you'll have to look it up in the manual.
================================================================================

Normally don't post much video game related content but this bug is giving me a case of the crankies and I figure I'm not the only one with this problem.

Watch in 1080p to read the process information, look for iw5mp.exe.

Start MW3 multiplayer
Join a game, play said game.
Once I'm back in the lobby or menu the CPU usage doesn't drop back down, it stays at about 50%.
Repeat this process through two, maybe three maps if I'm lucky and my computer is brought to a standstill so much so that I have to hit the reset button.

Basically if I want to play a game I have to quit every time the map ends, then restart the game in order to calm down the CPU usage.

My computer is more than capable of playing at least ONE multiplayer game with everything maxed out at 1920 x 1080 before this bug bends me over and takes me by surprise and it handles the single player game fine (well it did until I got some bullshit error about a lack of reliable packets or some shit. GG way to screw over paying customers with fucked up DRM).

I've tried putting everything on the lowest settings possible and the error is still there.

I've narrowed it down to tier0_s.dll from steam using Process Explorer from Microsoft

  • how did u fix it please replay...

  • @thekingzz1975 Technically I never fixed it, the issue is still there, I just stopped the game from opening up the ports it needs by disabling upnp which means I'm never picked as the host. Seeing as the issue only arises out of being picked as the host this "fixed" the high CPU usage but if everyone does this then the game won't be able to find any good hosts so it's a pretty crap "fix".

  • @icsamppl thanks alot bro but do u think that an update for the game will help fix this problem thanks :D

  • @thekingzz1975 You'd have to ask the game developers that one, I have no idea what is causing it or how easy it would be to fix it.

It might be worth noting that since I got an i7 quad core machine the issue is still there, but it doesn't slow my machine down any. It's a bid stupid to just assume everyone can go out and buy a new computer though.

  • I asked the activision support, without success... they are dumb... know nothing mw3 related seriously... they asked me some basic questions, and when they out of tips, just tried to blame my (exactly the same as your) processor(E8400). What is far suits the minimum requirement!(2,4gHz the minimum, and 3,0gHz the E8400) So they are disregard the whole thing/proble! Let us not wait for solution soon, according to me! I quarreled over the end with the bloke! So no hope for solution guys... sorry!

  • Hey! problem is really similar in my case. I used to play a few multiplayer match then my cpu usage goes 100%. I have just checked my router settings regarding the upnp but it has been disabled from the beginning. I dont know, maybe if you guys have some idea, would be appreciated. thx

  • @icsamppl Allright bro thanks alot i hope they will work hard on fixing this problem and make me buy a new pc , thanks

  • @JTDX97 Sorry, you'd be better off asking about that one on the steam forums. You can right click on the game and open up its properties. Then in the "local files" tab click the button that says "verify integrity of local game cache" (or similar). If that doesn't work then I suggest you check out the steam user forums, someone there might know the answer. You didn't try moving the mw3 directory outside of steam's "steamapps/common" folder did you? It has to stay where steam put it originally.

  • @icsamppl My multiplayer will update on steam and when i try to start it or campaign it says i should make sure its in the correct folder. my skyrim works fine tho. HELP!!!!!!!!!

  • @jamesvrx22 I've posted in the huge thread where everyone was complaining about high cpu usage, that was where I read the whole issue about it being because you get picked as the host, and about shutting down port forwarding.
