It's a well known fact
that the song / Love letter
was written in the 1940's
by the widow of a Japanese soldier
that left for his service to the
Japenese emporer
on their wedding night
The lyrics / Love letter
wasn't discovered by her daughter
till after her mothers death in 1962
in an old chest
she kept in her bedroom.
"Sukiyaki" in Japenese mean :
"Goodbye"

Firstly, Sukiyaki is a Japanese meal.
Secondly, the song, originally named "Ue wo muite arukou" was considered by the record company as somewhat too hard for the American audience to remember so they decided to name it "Sukiyaki", a name synonymous with Japan at the time.
