The issue is when all of your expenses are needs. Rent, car payments, utilities, food, gasoline, etc. We're living paycheck to paycheck because I make less than 1000 a month after taxes working full time and my husband while the military pays better than my job, he's not making that much more than I am...If he made a little less, we would qualify for food stamps and the like...and its not an uncommon thing for servicemembers to be in such poverty unfortunately...

Don't neglect the "needs" side for savings. Last year I cut $200/mo by refinancing my house, $75/mo by adjusting car insurance, $30/mo by discontinuing traditional phone and going to majicjack, $20/mo ? by installing attic radiant barrier myself...

Being financial stable is a matter of common sense. Sadly materialism and the "American Dream" so often requires common sense to be pushed aside.

I am only able to save 1600 dollars a month, and am living paycheque to paycheque more or less.
