Bangles - Eternal Flame (Live @ 'The Road Party', Houston '89)
Recorded live at 'The Road Party', which took place on the Beltway 8 Interchange @ I10 (yes, a freeway) near Houston, Texas on July 15, 1989 for the 'Everything, Everywhere' Tour.
This show has become an infamous anecdote in the footnotes of the history of Bangleonia. In Debbi Peterson's own words:
Q: What's the strangest thing that happened to you (or the band) while on tour?
DEBBI PETERSON
A: Well, actually, this one's kind of a well-known story - I know we've talked about it before, we all remember it so vividly! I know I won't forget it (laughs) ... It was in 1989, there was this new toll road going up in Houston, Texas and they had the Bangles come do a free concert for the opening ceremony. They were going to shut down the highway and put up a stage for us on the overpass. And we all thought maybe 20 thousand people would show up, but when we got there it was more like 75 thousand people just crammed onto this road to see us! So, we started playing, and at first it was all going along fine, but then someone in the band said to the crowd, 'put your hands together' and 75 thousand people all started clapping and stomping at the same time! The whole overpass started rocking and swaying - it felt like an earthquake. Worst of all was our light rig, it was completely shaking apart over our heads! And we were trying our best to keep calm, you know, and the structural engineer was even there, the guy who designed the overpass, so we figured, 'well, if he's sticking around it can't be all that bad'. Then HE ran away and so then we all got really scared. We pretty much figured it was more or less the end of the Bangles (laughing). Yknow, headlines start flashing through your mind Susanna, mid-song, decided shed had enough and ran off the stage and made a break for the tour bus. The three of us finished the rest of the song, said We have to go, and took off! Its funny now, but at the time it was really frightening. We actually thought we were going to die.
I've compiled all of the Bangles "Best In (Live) Show" tracks into five different volumes for download on Mediafire. This one is part of volume 3 which covers the 'Everything, Everywhere' tour of 1989 with selections from the Road Party event near Houston, Texas, as well as the last night of the tour in Santa Clara CA on September 2, 1989. That show would become the last performance by the band until their reunion in 2000.

Was this when they played the 'free' concert on the overpass of the new Sam Houston Tollway at I-10 West, sponsored by KKBQ? If so, I was there. They threatened to stop the concert because too many of us were jumping up and down on the bridge and it became a safety issue (or so they said).

Great story, thanks for sharing.
Even thought Susanna never hit that hight pitch note again other than on studio, they sounded pretty well live.
